NANC at NAEYC

Since 2002, members of NANC have attended the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s annual conference.  With a membership of over 110,000 early education professionals, NAEYC offers unsurpassed training, research and resources.  Our goal is to increase the participation of nannies within NAEYC and to raise NAEYC’s awareness of the nanny as a childcare professional.  For membership information, visit www.NAEYC.org.

NAEYC 2008 Annual Conference
Nov 5th - 8th in Dallas, TX

So what is our “nanny agenda”?  We’re working towards…

¨       having the title “nanny” included in NAEYC printed and online literature (e.g. membership forms, online surveys).  It’s important that nannies become part of the NAEYC vocabulary.

¨       having sessions at national, regional and state conferences more inclusive of nannies.

¨       having articles in Young Child include examples of and references to nannies.

¨       including nannies on the childcare continuum.  The childcare continuum, originally created by Toni Porter of Bank Street College, outlines the many types of care a child may receive, starting with the care closest to home.  Because this model is well known and often used with many of the populations within the NAEYC community (e.g. resource and referral agencies, educators, researchers), it’s essential that nannies are included.  This will not only give nannies an “official” place within childcare, but it will foster the recognition and acceptance of nannies as childcare professionals among NAEYC leadership and members.  NOTE: The continuum does not imply that one type of care is better than another.  It simply outlines the different types of care available.
